Veins

Veins carry deoxygenated blood to our heart. In our legs, blood is collected in the superficial veins, just below the skin surface, and delivered to deeper veins that run within our calf muscles. The muscular action of our calves helps to pump the blood against the force of gravity towards the heart. One-way valves inside the veins prevent the blood from travelling backwards, but if these valves fail to close properly, blood pools in the superficial veins causing them to distend, darken, and give an appearance some people don’t like.
WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS?
Spider veins are like varicose veins, but smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They are often red or blue, and have an appearance of tree branches or spider webs. They are mostly found on legs or face. They may cover a small or large area.
WHY DO VEINS APPEAR?
There isn’t a set reason as to why varicose or spider veins occur. A lot of the time it is simply genetics, but we do see women experiencing this problem more than men. Sometimes changes in oestrogen levels may have a role or hormonal changes linked to puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
Other factors linked to veins:
• Standing Or Sitting For Long Periods
• Being Immobile
• Lack Of Exercise
• Obesity
• Smoking
• Aging
